What Things Actually Cost in the Books

Wizarding prices are scattered through the novels — shop signs, dialogue, receipts. These are the prices J.K. Rowling actually wrote, converted at 1 Galleon ≈ $6.67 (£5 anchor).

Where the $6.67 Figure Comes From

USD value = Galleons × £5 × (£→$ reference rate 1.3348)
Sickles and Knuts convert at canonical denominations: 1 G = 17 S, 1 S = 29 Knuts

The author-stated anchor

J.K. Rowling stated in a 2001 Comic Relief chat that one Galleon is worth "about five pounds". The same figure is corroborated inside the books themselves: the Comic Relief foreword to Quidditch Through the Ages equates ~£174 million with "thirty-four million Galleons" (≈ £5.12 each). We convert that anchor to USD at the ECB reference rate (£1 ≈ $1.3348, 26 Oct 2026 — same snapshot as our Fantasy Exchange Calculator). That puts 1 Galleon ≈ $6.67 and 1 USD ≈ 0.1498 Galleons.

Why estimates vary

Purchasing-power analyses produce higher values — often $7–$25 per Galleon — because canon prices are inconsistent (a wand for life at $44 is suspiciously cheap; a newspaper for a cent or two is not). Wizarding prices were written for story, not economics. We show the author anchor because it is the only stated rate, and we flag the range rather than inventing a more "accurate" number.

The denominations are canon

Unlike the exchange rate, the denominations are explicit in the books: 1 Galleon = 17 Sickles = 493 Knuts (29 Knuts per Sickle). The awkward 17/29 ratios are presumably goblin-designed at Gringotts.

For cross-universe comparison, see our Fantasy Exchange Calculator (14 universes) and the Fantasy Currency Index 2026, which uses a different purchasing-power methodology.

Rowling, Comic Relief live chat, 12 March 2001: asked for the approximate value of a Galleon, she answered "About five pounds, though the exchange rate varies!" — per the transcript archived at accio-quote.org, as documented by the Harry Potter Lexicon. The only exchange rate ever given for wizarding currency.
  • Rowling, J.K. (2001). Comic Relief foreword ("Albus Dumbledore") in Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, 2001 charity editions: Comic Relief's then-total of ~£174 million is given as the equivalent of "thirty-four million Galleons" — implying ≈ £5.12 per Galleon, consistent with the interview figure.

Galleons to USD — Questions

Approximately $6.67 USD. J.K. Rowling stated that one Galleon is worth roughly £5, and we convert that to USD using our periodically reviewed reference rate (£1 ≈ $1.33). This is an author-stated approximation, not a market exchange rate.
Exactly 17 Sickles per Galleon — a canonical figure stated in the books. Each Sickle is 29 Knuts, so 1 Galleon = 17 Sickles = 493 Knuts.
It is author-stated rather than canon-internal. Rowling gave the figure in interviews and on her official site as an approximate real-world equivalent. Purchasing-power analyses of in-book prices often produce higher values (roughly $7–$25), because wizarding prices don't map cleanly to a modern economy. We use the author anchor because it is the only stated rate — and flag the uncertainty.
Harry's wand cost 7 Galleons (~$47). A butterbeer is about 2 Sickles (~$0.79). A ride on the Knight Bus costs 11 Sickles (~$4.32). At the other end, the Triwizard prize was 1,000 Galleons (~$6,674) and the Ministry bounty on Sirius Black was 10,000 Galleons (~$66,740).
Fans often estimate the Galleon via purchasing power — e.g. if a wand at 7 Galleons is comparable to a bespoke instrument, one Galleon could be worth $20 or more. Rowling's ~£5 figure is simpler and more consistent for quick conversion, which is why this calculator uses it. The truth is the wizarding economy was never designed to be internally consistent.
